At the age of nine, John O’Leary was involved in a fire that burned 100% of his body. He went from a happy, healthy nine-year-old to a patient in a hospital bed. His injuries were so severe that he was expected to die. Instead, he not only survived, he thrived and went on to inspire and empower others to live a more inspired life.
The key to his recovery? His mindset. “When you control your mindset, you control your life,” he told the audience of the Texas stop of Brian Buffini’s Success Tour. According to John, your mindset helps you achieve success.
The 2 questions that control your mindset.
Most people assume the victim mentality when life deals them a terrible hand, and ask themselves two questions: 1. Why me? and 2. What more can I do? They feel hopeless in their situation. After all, they’re just one person; what can they do to stop the series of misfortunes that have fallen upon them? They’re motivated by fear—fear of the unknown, fear of what can happen next and fear of making mistakes.
The most successful people also ask themselves two questions when they experience a challenge or setback: 1. Why me? and 2. What more can I do? While these look like the same questions, they’re actually quite different. While the victim operates under the guise of fear, the victor is motivated by love and hope. When they ask, Why me?, it’s not in despair, but in gratitude. They wonder how they got so lucky as to be chosen to take on such an incredible set of circumstances. When they ask, What more can I do?, it means what can they do to ensure that tomorrow is a bit better than today. They understand that perfection isn’t possible. As a result, they embrace mistakes as learning experiences that will help them do better tomorrow.
Happiness is a choice.
While John was recovering in the hospital, it would have been very easy for him to give up. Instead he chose to be happy. Of course, it helped that he was visited by Jack Buck, the announcer for the St. Louis Cardinals, who offered encouraging words and told him to keep fighting. However, with a strong support network around him, John decided not to be a victim of his circumstances and to choose happiness.
The power of gratitude.
What are you thankful for? When life gets tough, it helps to reflect on what you have—your relationships, your health, your business, whatever.
Every day, take a minute and ask yourself these two questions: 1. Why me? and 2. What more can I do to ensure that tomorrow is even better than today? Ask them from a place of gratitude and hope. In the morning, ask Why me? and reflect on what you’re thankful for in your life. In the evening, ask What more can I do to ensure that tomorrow is even better than today?
