Manage Your Stress in 4 Easy Steps

Take a break during your day to help you manage your stress.

Show us an adult who’s never experienced stress and we’ll show you a unicorn. No one is immune from stress. While some types of stress feel good—think of the rush one gets from running a marathon or bungee jumping. However, other types of stress may take a terrible toll on our minds and bodies, especially if we’re dealing with chronic stress. Not all stress is bad stress; however, it’s important to nip your stressors in the bud before they lead to negative physical impacts.

“Some stress is unavoidable, some is not. The trick is learning to distinguish between the two.”

–Dr. Paul Rosch

Get perspective. What is stressing you out right now? Make a list of everything that’s stressing you out, and include everything from a difficult transaction that you’re currently dealing with to the frustration of losing those last 5 pounds. Remember, you only have control over yourself. You can’t control outcomes or people’s reactions or emotions. With this said, are you stressing over things you can’t control?

Next to each item on your list, write an A if it’s a stress you can Accept (that is, one you can’t change) and a C if it’s a stress you can Change. For the stressors you can change, think about what you can do to change them.

Move. Exercise is a great stress-buster. Somehow everything seems better after a run or walk outside, or even 30 minutes on the elliptical. Exercise boosts endorphins and your energy levels, putting you in the right frame of mind to tackle your stresses head-on.

Take a nap. Take a cue from a 5-year old and take a nap. A 20-minute nap is beneficial to your health, and leaves you feeling refreshed and energized (just like exercise but with less sweat).

Pray or meditate. Prayer and meditation helps us to focus our thoughts and intentions so that we can deal with stress. If stress is leaving you frazzled, take a few minutes to pray or meditate.
