Heading to San Diego for Brian Buffini’s Success Tour on February 10th and 11th? If you’re arriving from out of the area, you’re in for a real treat—San Diego’s ideal climate make it a top destination for vacationers seeking to escape frigid winter weather elsewhere. Even if yWhile San Diego offers a ton of activities and spots to explore, here are a few ideas to get you started.
Take in the local museums. Museums abound in Balboa Park and throughout the city. February is also San Diego Museum Month which means half-price admission at 40 museums, monuments, historical sites and gardens throughout the city. Just pick up a Culture Card starting February 1 at a Macys store around town. For more information, visit http://www.sandiegomuseumcouncil.org/
Catch a concert in Coronado. The Coronado Ferry Landing is hosting free winter concerts every Sunday in February from 1-4pm. Visit www.coronadoferrylandingshops.com for more information.
Experience history (and maybe a haunting). The Hotel del Coronado was once the largest resort hotel in the world and has hosted a who’s who of presidents and celebrities during its time. The famous resort both a National Historic Landmark and a California Historic Landmark and is currently the second largest wooden structure in the United States. For $15 for adults (free for children 12 and under), you can take a docent-led 75 minute walking tour of the hotel every Tuesday and Friday at 10:30am and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. However, it’s strongly recommended that you make reservations ahead of time (call 619-437-8788 to reserve a spot). Or, just visit the hotel, enjoy a martini from the bar and be on the lookout for the ghost of Kate Morgan. Visit http://hoteldel.com/ for more information.
Have a beach day. San Diego touts 70 miles of coastline and February temperatures in the 60s. Explore the beaches around the city or drive your car or take the Coaster light rail north and check out the beach towns of Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad or Oceanside. Be sure to pack a camera—the sunset is sure to be breathtaking.
Explore the city. Lace up your walking shoes and put on your FitBit! Take a stroll through the Gaslamp Quarter and take in the shops and restaurants. Walk to Seaport Village and enjoy watching the ships pass by or look for the perfect souvenir. Walk or take the Trolley up to Old Town and escape into San Diego’s history. Check out Mission Bay Park and take a jog along the shoreline or fly a kite or head up to La Jolla to see the city from the top of Mt. Soledad and enjoy shopping and restaurants.
