What are your dreams? When you imagine your life 1 year, 5 years or 10 years down the road, what does it look like? Although you may have the best intentions, your dreams won’t make themselves come true. Goals are essential to turn your dreams into reality. Remember the words of Napoleon Hill, “What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.”
1. Visualize the life you want to lead.
Close your eyes and imagine your life five years from now. What do you see? Imagine the house you’re living in, the furniture your own, the car(s) in the driveway, etc. Are there children playing on the lawn? What trips are you planning? How is your health? What are your loved ones doing? Take the time to absorb every detail offered by your imagination to paint your future life.
2. Transform this vision into S.M.A.R.T. goals.
Once you have a vision of your future, turn what you see into measurable short-, mid- and long-range goals. Ask yourself: What do you aspire to be or have and why? How will you achieve it? What is your time frame for success? For example, if your vision includes buying your dream home, how much money will you have to save over the next five years in order make this goal a reality?
The answers to these questions will help you create S.M.A.R.T. goals. S.M.A.R.T. goals are:
Specific & written
Measurable in progress & completion
Realistic in time & skill
S.M.A.R.T. goals encourage tracking, which allows you to assess your current progress and adjust it accordingly. As a result, you’re more likely to see these goals through to completion.
It helps to break your goals into 10-day, 10-week and 10-month goals. What can you accomplish in 10 days? Over the next 10 weeks? What about the next 10 months? If you aspire to run a marathon in the next year, start by running a 5k and build from there.
3. Write it down and track your progress.
When you have nailed down your short-, mid- and long-range goals, write them down on a piece of paper and post it where you can see it on a daily basis, whether it’s your desk at work, your refrigerator or your nightstand.
