Preparation and planning are essential to having your best year.

Although 2014 may not be over just yet, now is the perfect time to prepare to make 2015 your best year ever. After all, now is the time many of us see a slight slowdown in business, giving us the opportunity to assess the previous year, think about what we should do differently next year and set measurable goals to reach in 2015. Are you ready to have your best year ever? Follow these three tips to get started:

1. Prepare. As we learned from guest speaker, former Mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani at the New York City stop of Brian Buffini’s Success Tour, preparation is a key leadership skill, one that helps you fight the fear of the unexpected, whether it’s the nerves before a big listing presentation or the anxiety about calling clients in your database. The more you practice and prepare, the more comfortable you’ll be to handle anything unexpected that may occur.

Take some time to brush up on your dialogues, revisit listing presentation templates and sort your database. All of these activities will help you to get a huge jump on 2015.

2. Set goals. Goals are important to your success, as long as they’re measurable and realistic. Many of us set goals in January, only to forget them by the time the snow thaws. In order to avoid this fate, keep your goals where you can see them and track your progress. By tracking your activities, numbers and results, you’ll have a better picture of how close you are to achieving your goals.

3. Make a plan. What’s your plan for 2015? Planning is key—it helps you prepare for what’s coming down the pipeline. Before 2015 begins, mark down your vacation time and other important dates on your calendar. Then, start to plan your months, weeks and days. Not only will this help you to take control of your time, it’ll also encourage other people to have respect for your time. That’s not to say that unexpected events or situations won’t arise; it’s just that with a plan, you’ll be better prepared to maintain your composure and remain flexible.

2015 Bonus Tip: Focus on learning. Self-improvement is essential to your growth as a professional. Read every business book you can get your hands on, listen to business-oriented podcasts (like Brian Buffini’s monthly Conference Call) in your car and register for real estate events like Brian Buffini’s Success Tour.
