While a formal party takes a bit of planning, your guests will be blown away by the level of thought you put into it.

For large parties, with or without children: Festive buffet
Buffets are a great option for large parties, where guests can choose from a variety of foods and nearly everyone’s dietary needs are met—even those of finicky children. Have a separate table for holiday desserts like gingerbread cookies, cakes, candy and other sweet treats.
