Delegating tasks is difficult, especially if you’re used to doing things your own way. However, if you want your business to be successful, it’s essential to clear some things off of your plate so that you can focus on lead generation and serving your clients. Getting help is the first step; however, the next step is to learn how to delegate tasks to others, and trust that they’ll get them done to your standards. Here are five ways to let go and delegate like a pro.
Establish expectations. By establishing your expectations up front, you clear the way for better communication and a positive work environment.
Show them how. Many people who resist delegating tasks do so because they don’t think the other person can do things as quickly and efficiently as they can. By taking the time to show the other person how to employ the processes you use, you give them the opportunity to learn your system and ask questions.
Be patient. No matter who you hire, there will be a period of adjustment, during which the other person will be learning the tasks you’ve assigned them. Be patient with them while they get the hang of things, and encourage them to ask questions.
Be open. Over time, your assistant will develop their own spin on the way they complete tasks that may in fact be more efficient than the way you are used to. Encourage them to increase efficiency, and give them the freedom to make these tasks their own.
Check in. Although no one wants their boss to hover over their shoulder while they’re working, checking in regularly, especially in the beginning, will not only ensure that the task is done correctly, but it will also make your hire more confident in their abilities.
