Many of us want to adopt better habits, but find that our progress goes out the window in times of stress. In this clip from BuffiniTV, Brian Buffini shares the science of habit and offers tips to help you change your habits for good.
What craving is your habit satisfying? For example, many of us turn to unhealthy food and drinks in times of stress. A chocolate bar or a glass of wine provides an instant of pleasure and temporary reduction of stress. When we bite into the candy, we’re no longer thinking about the paperwork that we forgot to send or our interaction with a challenging client. Instead we’re thinking, “This tastes so good!” That becomes our reward for stress. The trick is to find a reward that helps you to release the stress you’re feeling so that you can make healthier choices.
Test it. Once you’ve analyzed your habit, try different rewards until you find something that satisfies the urge. In our industry, we don’t take the opportunity to process our days—after all, we don’t work the typical 9 to 5 that other professionals enjoy. By not processing our days, we continue to build stress, then continue the cycle of stress eating and feeling horrible. Take the time to decompress at the end of the day and find something that releases your stress. For many folks, it’s exercise. When you’re feeling the stress start to build up, go for a jog or walk or take a relaxing yoga class. Exercise fulfills your craving of stress relief, but in a more positive way than gorging down a package of Oreos. Once you finish exercising, you’ll no longer feel like indulging in unhealthy treats and the endorphins that your brain releases will give you a new lease on life.
The routine. Once you’ve found a newer, healthier reward that satisfies your habit, you’ll create a routine around it. If exercise is your new reward, schedule time to do it every day.
