4 Healthy Habits that May Boost Your Productivity

Load up on whole foods to give your body the fuel it needs to perform at its best.

 

How do you jumpstart your mornings or overcome the 3pm energy slump that many of us experience? If you’re like most people, you probably start your day with a cup or two of coffee. In the afternoon, you may pour another cup of coffee or reach for a soda or candy bar for a short-lived sugar rush. Caffeine and sugar are only a temporary fix for morning and midafternoon sluggishness. Instead of pouring another cup of coffee or digging around for loose change to get a treat from the vending machine, try these suggestions. Not only will you be more energized, you’ll also find that you’re more productive.

Take a break. Want to be more productive right now? Take a 10-minute break from what you’re doing and do nothing for those 10-minutes. That’s right, don’t check your email or read the latest celebrity gossip or news briefs; instead, get up from your desk and take a quick nap, look out the window or just zone out where you are. Your brain needs time to rest and recharge. Taking breaks throughout the day allows you to decompress and recharge your batteries so that you can attack your activities with renewed vigor.

Go for a walk. Walking is not only great for your health and body; it can also help you to clear your head. Walking, like all types of exercise, causes your body to release endorphins, the feel-good brain chemicals. If you have the opportunity, get outside for a walk around the block and soak up the sunshine. Not only will you get a healthy dose of vitamin D, the sunlight will also prompt your body to produce cortisol and melatonin as well as boost your mood.

Eat whole foods. Whole, healthy foods are your body’s best friends; they’re the fuel it needs to survive. If you want your body to perform at its best, give it whole, unprocessed fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, grains and animal and vegetable proteins. In order for your body and brain to function correctly, they need the nutrients found in these whole foods. Although chocolate bars, potato chips and deep fried foods are tasty, they don’t provide enough of the essential nutrients your body needs to thrive. So, instead of reaching for a candy bar for a 3pm pick-me-up, reach for an apple, a handful of almonds or a few carrots instead.

Drink water. Most of us start our days with a cup of coffee, but did you know that a glass of water can provide your body with a huge boost of energy? Think about, when you wake up your body is thirsty; it’s dehydrated. And this dehydration makes you feel sluggish. Your body needs water to rehydrate stat! Water kickstarts your system and rehydrates your body, including organs like your brain. As a result, you’ll feel a rush of energy that will carry you through most of your morning, unlike the rush from that cup of java. Drinking several glasses of water per day prevents you from becoming dehydrated and keeps your energy up so that you can do your daily lead generating activities.

    LOL – I take those 10 minute breaks throughout my day – sometimes only 5, but they really help. Since I work at a prison, some would say that I am just goofing off. But I have learned to take a few minutes here and there for MY sake. It allows me to do more both for my fellow staff and for the inmates.
